Password Manager – the 5 best tools for secure passwords

A password manager can really be a lifesaver if you, like me, find it difficult to remember which passwords you have in different systems.

It used to be easier, and much more unsafe. Many systems had no requirements at all on what a password should look like. Some systems wanted the password to have at least 8 characters, one of which was a special character. If you then came up with a smart password that met these requirements, you could reuse it on every single login you had.

Today it is not that simple. More and more systems require you to update your passwords periodically. And then the password must absolutely not be the same as the 5 previous ones. Two-factor authentication is also becoming more common. It all gets a little more complicated for the user, but oh so much safer.

But then there are the rescuers in need, namely the password managers, who make our days much easier. The password manager helps you remember the different passwords you have in different systems, helps you change them to strong passwords and protects you from data intrusion. The only thing you need to remember is your “master password”.

So which password manager should you install. Below I have listed the 5 that I think are best.

Lastpass password manager lösenordshanterare

LastPass

Free version: Yes
Paid version cost: $ 3 / month (2.90 € / month)
Platforms: Mac, iOS, Windows, Android, Chrome OS, Linux
Two-factor authentication: Yes

The password manager LastPass has a good free version, but if you want to invest in security, it only costs 3 US $ (2.90 €) a month. For the premium version, you get support for physical two-factor authentication keys and 1GB storage of files, online. Your accounts also get dark-web monitoring and you get access to their premium technical support. The free version gives you many features, such as an unlimited number of passwords, synchronization over an unlimited number of devices.

To use LastPass, you do not need to download any program, but it works completely as a browser extension.

All in all, a really good password manager, with a really good free version and an even better premium version.

dashlane lösenord password

Dashlane

Free version: Yes
Paid version cost: $ 3.3 / month
Platforms: Mac, iOS, Windows, Android, Chrome OS, Linux
Two-factor authentication: Yes

Dashlane is a password manager with an intuitive user interface and very good software for computers. The free version is unfortunately a bit scanty as you can only have it on one device. The paid version, on the other hand, is a lot better with a built-in VPN service. But perhaps best of all is their bulk feature where you can change many passwords at once.

Keeper

Free version: Yes
Paid version cost: $ 27.99 / year
Platforms: Mac, iOS, Windows, Android, Chrome OS, Linux
Two-factor authentication: Yes

With very strong security and a robust web interface, Keeper is a full-fledged password manager. Unfortunately, the free version only allows one device and since the paid version is quite cheap, it may be worth choosing Keeper Unlimited.

Keeper is known for their very strong security. The trade-off for security is that some user-friendliness is wasted. You can not bulk-change your passwords and you can not get a PIN to access the mobile app.

But good security for a good price is probably still exactly what you are looking for when installing a password manager.

1password

1Password

Free version: Yes
Paid version cost: $ 2.99 / month
Platforms: Mac, iOS, Windows, Android, Chrome OS, Linux, Darwin, FreeBSD, OpenBSD
Two-factor authentication: Yes

For those of you who use a Mac or an iPhone, 1Password is an excellent choice. Unfortunately, it does not work quite as well for Android and Windows users. The design has fallen a bit behind, especially for the mobile app.

But 1Password has things that offset this. Their browser extension for Chrome, Firefox and Brave is very good. There you can work directly in the browser instead of an installed program. But best of all is their Travel mode. Travel mode can delete sensitive data from your devices when you are traveling, and then put them back when you return home.

Roboform

Roboform

Free version: Yes
Paid version cost: $ 1.99 / month
Platforms: Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, Chrome OS
Two-factor authentication: Yes

This password manager has a few years on its neck. Roboform has been around since 1999. However, they have managed to keep most things updated and modern, even if the computer application may feel a bit blockish.

With Roboform, you can share passwords, two-factor authentication, and a password generator, if you’ve chosen Roboform Everywhere, their premium version. Then you also get round-the-clock support.
