Coverage

What does coverage mean? – Dstny explains!

Coverage means, coupled with telephony and internet, an area that is covered by a carrier in delivering internet or telephony. If there is enough coverage the supplier can cover all services in the area. This doesn’t necessarily have to be something that you either have or don’t, but can be something very bad or very good.

In general you could say that coverage for internet and telephony is improved at steady pace. It’s a result of public investments but also something that is dependent on private actors and their development of services that cater to customer needs. The improvements of coverage have drastic effects on for example work.

When coverage is good you can perform most work tasks that previously required an office in a city. To improve coverage is in other words a way to make a greater part of Sweden living. When it comes to more advanced services, it requires good coverage everywhere in a bigger building.

  • Quality of coverage depends on where you are
  • Optimal coverage inside requires signal fortifying hardware, for example repeater equipment.
  • Different carriers have varying levels of good coverage in a certain area
  • Consult a coverage map that shows how good coverage is
  • Mobile coverage and internet coverage aren’t always the same thing
  • There is a lot you can do yourself to improve your coverage
  • Improvements in coverage changes society and our opportunities

How to improve your coverage

Even if you don’t have the ability to move closer to a base station there is a lot you can do to get better coverage. You can for example install a 3G or a 4G antenna or just move to a better modem – when talking about coverage for internet.

By having your router as close to the antenna as possible you get a stronger signals, which means that it’s good to have a short antenna cable. The most important decision you can make when choosing carrier is in comparison of who can provide the best coverage at your workplace.

Invest in good coverage where it’s needed, like a conference room or in an open office landscape. You can achieve this with strategic placements of antenna and other important equipment, but also by disposing facilities from where the landline units are placed.

How will coverage change in the future?

There are a lot of discussions today about if it’s better to invest in pulling fiber to your office or property where you live or if it’s better to wait for 5G. Many carriers compete on being the first in offering 5G at a bigger scale.

The denotation 5G is a measurement of what speed you can expect and data amounts in size order 100 Mbit/s and 1Gbit/s for normal users and faster internet for those in need (and can pay). A normal HD-quality movie could take just a few seconds to download.

Many believe that it will be first in 2025 that we will have 5G coverage even in smaller areas, but in cities it’s already on its way. It’s worth mentioning that fiber has the same capacity and it’s an available technique today.
